Recovery sucks!

Hello friends and readers, I am officially on day 5 of recovery from my exchange surgery, and I am woefully reminded that recovery sucks! I'm in a lot of discomfort in my chest (obviously) and my thighs, where they took some fat to "graft" around my implants. It's not fun. My spirits are pretty low and that will be reflected in this post.

I'm frankly annoyed that my doctors made this surgery seem like it was going to be a breeze. What I've slowly learned is that in cancerland, there are varying degrees of awful. Like with the third suite of chemo that I received- sure, it was LESS awful than the literal poison, but its still made me hazy, exhausted, and dehydrated. Sure, this surgery is LESS awful than the one where they took out all of my breast tissue and my tumor, but it's still pretty terrible to have gruesome sutures across your chest and bruising all over your legs. The fact that I've been through worse does not make this any less painful now.

For medical purposes, surgery itself went "well." I didn't have to have surgical drains, which is a huge relief. I had this view from my room when I arrived:

But I woke up alone, looking like shit:

Every day is a little bit better, but in general, I still feel pretty rough. Fuck cancer. Fuck these fake ass boobs. Fuck the original ones that were trying to kill me. Fuck that I have to get up tomorrow to go get an infusion while recovering. Fuck it all.

I can't leave without a little bit of gratitude though- thanks for all the messages and check-ins and fake booze (<3 katie+joe) and orchid (<3 audrey), thanks to Greg for giving me a kick in the butt and telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself, and thanks to my parents for being here to care for me despite the global pandemic we're still horrifically living. Thanks for those who are still reading this dinky little blog.

So that's it. For now, I'm thinking back to ten (!) years ago when travel was a thing and Nicole and I were romping around Europe:

With love from my couch in Brooklyn, dreaming of Paris <3.

Big day for little bear!

To compliment a vom-filled day, I am starting this blog post with a vom-worthy title. When we got up yesterday, Greg said to me, "It's a big day for little bear!" That is one of his many names for me, and sometimes he gets the title of big bear, because, yes we are occasionally gross 🐻s. And what a big day it was! We got to the MSKCC Infusion Center in BK by 8 am. A wonderful nurse named Asha administered my IVs. My parents ran some errands at the Target and Marshalls at Atlantic (Tata M- elle a finalement trouver son propre cady zizette!) Meanwhile, Jeremy, Greg and I hung out and had time for one round of Sushi Go Party (which I won, btw): And then, voila, we were done! I felt absolutely fine leaving the clinic, so we decided to swing by Milk and Honey for brunch. Friends, I hesitate to even post this picture, because the reminder of yesterday still rings hard in my esophagus. But for the sake of the blog, here goes: Let's just say I was a little overzealou...

Tell us how you really feel!

Hi friends, I know this blog has mostly been information transmission so far, but now for a feelings-y post. First things first– so far this week has been a bit rough. We did my fertility "egg retrieval" procedure on Monday AM, which went well (Yay!). But after, I was feeling really bloat-y and in pain, so we came home and were just hanging out on the couch. Then the landlord who will be renting my parents a crash pad in our building during my treatment came by with an offer to show us the apartment. I told G I could scheme it if we took it easy, so we took the elevator up there, nice and easy. But at the end of our little walk through, I told Greg that I wasn't feeling well and wanted to go home. Next thing I knew, I woke up propped up on a mattress on the floor. Turns out I fainted twice, back-to-back. Was in and out. Tried to go back downstairs, and fainted a third time before making it back to our apartment. Greg decided we should call the EMT, and we spent our Memori...

My people are the best people!

Friends, it's been an exhausting week. Monday was very rough, but each day has gotten progressively better. Did a bit of work yesterday for my consulting gig, and have been hydrating like hell. Have been a little groggy, especially in the evenings, but hope to return to a semi-normal work schedule tomorrow. Yet among these rough days, I've had so many reminders of what an incredible support network I have. So yes, it's that time... a shoutout post! n.b.- this is in no particular sequential/chronological order, and I apologize in advance for any omissions. First things first, I came back from my first chemo session on Monday and was overwhelmed to find an INSANE care package from my extended NYC + NOVA girlfriends. Skin care products custom-made for chemo, UBER gift certificates, make-up, oh my! : The note was short and sweet– "You got this, we got you. All of our love." Made my heart melt. So– Nicole, Emily, Katie, Lauren, Allix, Martina, Elana, Bekah, Sa...
