Hello! This will be a quick one as I am very still much in post-double mastectomy + axillary lymph node dissection land. I'll start by saying that the title of this blogpost is that of a Bonny Doon song, one of the artists we saw when were upstate this past weekend for the Woodsist Fest:
It was awesome, and the weather was perfect. But you guys don't care about that, nor do you care about the great Rosh Hashanah dinner we had on Sunday night!* You want to know more about how I'm feeling and all that good stuff. Well, surgery is officially over 🙏, and it went mostly as planned! I want to give a hugeeee shoutout to our friends Austin and Allix, who stayed at the surgery center all day on Tuesday. Austie kept G company while Allix, who works at Sloan in the pathology lab, stayed on top of lymph node dissection like it was precious cargo! We love them and little doodis so damn much.
After waking up pretty out of it (but still cracking some good jokes about how bedpans resembled cowboy hats, apparently) I stayed one night in the hospital, during which G and I ordered pho:
Greg wanted me to highlight my "fall risk" socks (for further info, see this blog: "Tell us how you really feel!", May 2019) in the above photo because they were cute and yellow, so I obliged. After being checked on by my docs, surgeons, and nurses all Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, Greg and I got up and had our continental breakfast.** We also did a few laps around the hospital, which is lucky enough to have this view of the Queensborough:
And after seeing my physical therapist, who taught me all kinds of fun exercises I can do with my arms below 90 degree angles, they discharged me yesterday, just like that! So now I'm home with G, my mom, tata Aline, tonton Armand, Jeremy, and Crystal (Jon and Dad left yesterday). We are watching a lot of Terrace House, staying busy with PT 5x a day, plus keeping on top of all of my meds and surgical drains and such. I am uncomfortable and in occasional pain, but it's nothing unmanageable. I am here, I am alive. Sending love, and more soon.
*Happy 5780 to all those celebrating. Sweetness, joy, and MOST OF ALL, health!
**so fancy!

Isn't it also a Kawara art reference? Intentionally or otherwise.
